So obviously there is no "What Ch'all Cookin' and Eatin' This Weekend? thread this weekend. I decided to take off Friday and go to visit some old friends I used to hunt with. It's only about an hour and a half to Angie Louisiana but when you get there is seems like you're hours away from the New Orleans area. We had some great times hunting deer and freshwater fishing up there. We lost the lease on the land and someone bought the property.
On a food related note I did bring Dale the patriarch of the family there a doberge' cake which is something he loves.
After sitting around talking and catching up on things someone said something about going to lunch. It used to be back then there weren't many places to eat out at all. Our usual gathering spot was Stuart's on 21 which was a little hole in the wall greasy spoon that served breakfast, lunch and I believe dinner. Usually we were in the woods by mid afternoon and ended up at the camp after that so we rarely ventured to town after that evening hunt. Well, off to lunch we ended up going the opposite direction of Stuart's and ended up just across the state line into Mississippi and at another little place I think was called Candies Country Diner. We go in and of course everbody knows everybody else. Except me! I immediately drew a lot of attention being the "New Guy" in the place. Lol..... very friendly place and you feel at home very fast. The lunch is served buffet style and the main things which that day was fresh fried catfish go so fast they don't have a chance to get cold. Lots of side dishes, fried chicken, and more but again the hot item of the day was the fried catfish. I went with the fried catfish filets and the whole fried looked fantastic but I didn't feel like messing with the bones. I really should have gone back and gotten one because so many people in there were going to town on them. They were whole small catfish about seven inches long with no head of course and the flesh just flaked off and looked so good. I want to go back just to have that! Now, I was comfortably full after having my filets along with ruttabegas and potato salad. Sweet tea for a drink like it's made in the south and I passed on dessert.
Anyway, so now I'll have to go back and have another visit so I can go and try that whole fried catfish. Damn! I can't stop thinking about it. Lol......
Later that afternoon about 5:30 I had to say goodbyes and see you again soon and head back home. While there we were doing something in one of the guy's work shop and had some serious thunder rumbling then all of a sudden the skies opened up. It came down really heavy and the temperature dropped about twenty degrees. Raining on that metal roof made me want to find a spot to lay down and take a nap. Love that sound of rain on a tin roof! It was nice on the drive home that it was still 72ish* until I got close to Covington and then it shot back up into the eighties. I had a nice visit and need to get back up there in the next couple of months and go back to try that darn whole fried catfish.
