Out going to pick up some feed for the chickens this afternoon I decided to stop by the Michael's Seafood to see what the shrimp looked like. Well, they are some real beauties! I decided to get 15 lbs. of their 10-15 count Lake shrimp for $3.50 @ lb. All I could think of while Charlene was bagging them is New Orleans style BBQ Shrimp!!!!! These two shrimp alone would make a great sandwich with how big they are. Could even slice them in half lengthwise they were so big. I deheaded about half of them and have the heads on a low simmer to make a nice shrimp stock that I'll freeze for when I need it. That will make for a real nice seafood gumbo! I almost forgot to mention that they had some fresh boiled crabs, mediums for $16.99 @ doz. and you get a half dozen free. So since my wife loves boiled crabs I grabbed a doz. and a half for her and I'm sure I'll get to have one or two. ;D ;D

That looks so good!!! Is there a big difference in lake vs gulf shrimp? Is that why they are so cheap, or is that normal?
If I could get shrimp and crab for those prices it would be hard to eat anything else.

The shrimp in Lake Pontchartrain are the same you catch in the Gulf of Mexico. Shrimp season in federal waters is basically open year round but, inland shrimp seasons are dictated by whether they meet certain size requierments and the season just opened about a week ago. The big difference is that getting shrimp from a closer body of water(and I live less than a half mile from the lake)means that they are much fresher and probably only a few hours from being taken from the waters as opposed to maybe days old(from the Gulf waters). Same deal with the crabs. As for the price, I believe the owners of the seafood store I buy from has their own shrimp boats instead of buying from other shrimpers or wholesalers so, that means basically no middleman so to say. Less expense allows for better price to sell cheaper and sell more quantitywise = more profit. More you sell(turn around)fresher the product = happy customers that keep coming back.
