Alright I guess if you have squirrels in suburbs you can expect to find other critters as well. Having chickens in the yard I've had opossums come into the yard and I suspect they killed one of my hens a while back. I started trapping them and relocating them in woods. I hate opossums! Probably caught at least twenty of them in about a year. I hadn't seen any in a good while in the yard but I have a stick positioned in an orange tree that if a critter has come in the yard via that tree will let me know it's time to set the trap. Never failed! Well, for a couple of weeks I've suspected that the opossums were back. So about a week ago I set the trap and baited with dog food. Nothing all week. This morning it's barely light and one of the dogs wanted to go out so I went out there to check on the chickens and decided to check the trap(it's behind the shed so I have to make a point to go behind to check it. I look up(it's set about fence top level as the opossums usually travel the fence)and there's no trap! I look on the ground and there it is upside down with a fricking raccoon in it and it's pissed! I can't recall having raccoon in my yard but who knows for sure what lurks in any yard at night?
So, I guess I'll have to tack this bandit for a drive later to release it in the wild. I'll bet there will be more caught after this one.
I'll get a picture of it later.

I would be scared to trap a racoon and then try to let him go. They are not scared of humans and will come after you. I am sure I got a racoon in my yard. The last couple of weeks, some thing has been stealing the sugar water out of my hummingbird feeder in the middle of the night. I have seen the tracks in a mud puddle. Had lots of possums over the years. Why don't you try cooking him Nate. I understand they go good with a glass of red wine.

Jim, I can understand you having critters because you live along the Mississippi levee and you could probably trap an unending number of them. I'll have to rig up a release from a distance for this one. Taking it for a ride later this morning. No, I'm not cooking this one. I have eaten raccoon before though. A cousin that used to hunt made a coon sauce piquante. It really wasn't bad.

I have never eatin coon. I have been told it is good. There was a old grocery store on Poland and St Claud that had a sign on the side of it's building, advertising coon meat. As far as living next to the levee. At 5 AM I went out to get my news paper afew years ago. I thought I saw a lost dog walking in the street in front of my house, in the dark. When I took a closer look, it was a coyote.

Ha! My neighbors had raccoons OPEN the door on their refrigerator (under the house) and eat most of the birthday cake that was in there! And then they had the nerve to leave the door open all night!
We have raccoons, possums, armadillos, red foxes, deer, rabbits, an occasional coyote, owls, hawks, egrets...its like Wld Kingdom here. The rabbits are more prevalent when the foxes and coyotes aren't around!
Another neighbor was putting corn out for the wood ducks, and the raccoons were eating it all. He would trap the raccoons and drive them about a mile to the boat launch and release them. They were probably back before he was!
It took a bit of getting used to, but it really is interesting...you never know "who" you're going to see around here!

Here it is! It was about at least 20 lbs and you can see the top half of the door is damaged from it wanting out.
Relocated it came home clean the trap off and reset it just in case there are more.
Don't get me wrong I love animals and wildlife. I just don't want the dogs to corner a possum or raccoon and get hurt. I relocate the ones I catch(mostly..... ). One of the dogs has hurt her leg and back a couple of times charging out to the back of the shed after whatever it is she smells. It's cheaper to trap the critters and relocate than the vet bills!

Pet? I'd doubt it. Not the way this thing was growling. Sounded like a German shepherd.
