I think this qualifies as a Louisiana product and I can't believe it took me thirty years to finally try it. Dong Phuong is a Vietnamese French bakery in New Orleans East that has been in existance for over thirty years in basically a very much Vietnamese cultured neighborhood. I finally decided to get out that way today while out doing errands. Wow! Have I been missing out on a tremendous treat! For that matter anyone who hasn't been there is missing out on some fantastic foods and baked goods.
They also have a restaurant that I'm sure came into being after they were doing so well as a bakery. I'm not sure about that fact but, I'd bet I'm right.
Alright so I get there and walk in to pick up some of their extremely popular French bread pistolettes. Well, they have a huge amount of different baked goodies that I know I'll be back to try. While there I decided to get a couple of their Banh Mi sandwiches(these are basically Vietnamese versions of the famed Poor boy or Poboy or po-boy). I couldn't decide which to get so I got two French Cold Cuts and one Liver Pate' Banh Mi's. Below is a link to their site and menu. Check it out.

I also got a bbq pulled pork steamed bun, two Cream Rolls(about 6" long sweet soft brioche type bread with a coconut and cream base sort of filling. Not too sweet and very light.), and ten loaves of their tender, crisp and flakey crust pistolettes. Now a pistolette is a Louisiana local bread that is about 4" long and used to make small sandwiches. They're basically mini loaves of French bread.
Well, Dong Phuong's pistolettes are at least nine inches long! Below is a picture of one of the three Banh Mi I bought.
This is a French Cold Cut Banh Mi-All sandwiches are dressed with:
Homemade Aioli, Pickled Carrots & Daikon, JalapeƱos, Cilantro, Cucumbers
I ate one just like this one and a Liver Pate' on my way home and they were outstandingly fantastic!!! I know that sounds like a lot to eat but, the bread these sandwiches is like I've NEVER had before. So light, tender and crisp crust. Uh. uhh.. uhhhhh..... Delicious!!!!!!! I can go on and on about these things..........
Some of the other things I got while there(don't worry! I didn't eat everything. Well, that's almost true).
Steamed bun with bbq pulled pork
The Cream Rolls. Okay, I had to taste it..... ;D
Ten loaves(pistolettes)of their fabulous bread. Okay 9, once again I had to eat one on the way home. They just smelled so damn good I couldn't resist. Didn't I tell you they were light and tender and crisp and ohhhh.... so good!
So, the bottom line here is that this is a fantastic place and it's a good thing it's a long drive from home or work or I'd be there everyday. Now that I've passed on this knowledge to all of you that might not have known about Dong Phuong, do yourself and get there and try soem of the stuff they make. Even the long drive from my neighborhood is totally worth the trip.
